Dear Community,
On March 2, 2025, the Haliburton Kawartha Northumberland Peterborough (HKNP) Health Unit (formerly the Haliburton Pine Ridge District Health Unit) declared Highland Wood Long Term Care Home to be in a Respiratory Outbreak.
Currently five (5) residents are experiencing respiratory symptoms. All symptomatic residents have been isolated to their rooms and placed on droplet and contact precautions.
The team at Highland Wood is working diligently to reduce the spread of this infection. Increased PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is being used by staff to reduce the risk of transmission, and any residents affected by the outbreak are being isolated in their rooms to prevent any further spread of the virus. Enhanced cleaning measures have also been put into place. Please note that the family/POA of any resident who displays symptoms will be contacted directly by our nursing team.
A huge thank you to the Highland Wood team for doing all they can to keep our residents and their families safe and comfortable during the outbreak.
Highland Wood understands the importance of visits to our residents even during an outbreak however, visitors should be aware that there is a higher potential risk of acquiring illness when visiting a LTC home during an outbreak. You may want to consider rescheduling your visit for another time. During an outbreak, resident visits should only occur in the residents own room, we ask that you please avoid visits in communal areas of the home. Visitors are encouraged to wash their hands frequently using the alcohol hand rub supplied through-out the home and apply a mask when you enter the LTC home (masks are supplied at the entrance). Visitors should only visit one resident when they come to avoid the spread of illness to others. If you are visiting a resident who is ill, please ask a staff member to assist you with putting the appropriate PPE on before entering the resident’s room. Visitors with respiratory symptoms should postpone their visit for at least 5 days after the onset of symptoms.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Burns West
Chief Nursing Executive, HHHS
