Long-Term Care

Haliburton Highlands Health Services manages two Long-Term Care facilities – Hyland Crest in Minden and Highland Wood in Haliburton – that provide high-quality care for those no longer able to live at home.

Daily activities, nutritional meals, and visiting entertainers help to ensure well-rounded events for those who choose to participate, and privacy in the one-and-two room suites offer rest and relaxation for those so inclined. All residents' rooms are on a central air-conditioning system.

Come and visit any time, provide entertainment, volunteer, or ask for a tour of the home.

Both homes are operated and funded according to the Ministry of Long-Term Care standards, and offer private and semi-private suites, daily activities, nutritional meals, well-rounded events and visiting entertainers, seasonal decorating, and spiritual sessions (church) for residents of all faiths.

Registered nursing staff are on site 24-hours a day, and Personal Support Workers/Registered Practical Nurses provide one-on-one care to meet the needs of all residents. Each home has a Medical Director who ensures examination and monitoring of residents occur on a regular basis. Specialists are accessible as required, with many other services available such as physiotherapy, dental care, hair and nail care, geriatric psychiatry, etc.

Meal plans include two choices at every meal, with appealing favourites. Diners’ Clubs at each home, made up of residents and the Manager of Food Services, provide input on meal requests and special dinners. The dining atmosphere is monitored to create a pleasurable dining experience, with tablecloths, background music, and friendly attendants.

Residents’ Councils encourages input about improvements, concerns, and other requests. Family Councils provide mutual support, empowerment, and advocacy for family and friends of Long-Term Care residents. Please visit the Family Council page for more information (link in menu to the right).

To register a complaint about a Long-Term Care home in Ontario, you can contact the LTC Action Line at 1-866-434-0144 (TTY 1-800-387-5559). The line is open 7 days a week, from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM EST.

Complaints and concerns-

The way to make your complaint depends on the type of complaint. There are two types of complaints:

1. Non-urgent complaints - these include less serious complaints related to diet, activities or care. Contacting Highland Wood or Hyland Crest directly is often the best and fastest way to address a problem. All complaints are taken seriously. If a resident or family member has a complaint, they can inform the charge nurse or manager at the home. All complaints are investigated, and a response and resolution are provided to the person who made the complaint.

2. Urgent complaints - These include cases of harm, neglect or danger to residents. The ministry will respond quickly to urgent complaints — in some cases, on the same day. To report an urgent complaint, contact the home directly or call the Long-Term Care Family Support and Action Line toll free at 1-866-434-0144.

All complaints are taken seriously. If a resident or family member has a complaint, they can inform the nurse in charge or manager at the home over the phone, or in writing. All complaints are investigated, and a response and resolution are provided to the person who made the complaint. By law, some complaints must also be sent to the Ministry of Long-Term Care by the home. For more information about types of complaints and how to make them, visit the Ministry’s website.
