Dear Community,
February is heart month, a time to bring awareness and attention to the importance of cardiovascular health. With that comes an exciting opportunity to share what Haliburton Highlands Health Services (HHHS) is doing to support the health and wellbeing of stroke patients in our community. Often, when new modalities or equipment are introduced, we often lose track of the impact and magnitude that these efforts are having on patients. I am pleased to share some exciting news that will positively impact stroke care in the Highlands.
HHHS has partnered with the Central East Stroke Network to participate in the Endovascular Thrombectomy (EVT) program. EVT is a standard of care for management of ischemic stroke patients who may benefit from advanced treatment. EVT improves patient outcomes and enhances the quality of life for those Indviduals diagnosed with a stroke. In January, the HHHS tested our EVT process along with EMS and provincial partners during a mock exercise designed to work through the required assessment and diagnostic testing required by the Stroke Network.
Thank you to our community for raising awareness and funds to purchase equipment that truly saves lives. This program would not be possible without our new CT scanner.
As always, if you are experiencing the signs and symptoms of a stroke, please call 911.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me directly any time.
Kindest regards,
Jennifer Burns West
Chief Nursing Executive, HHHS
